Dokolo, Uganda | Dokolo Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Barbara Akech has welcomed the planned launch of the Alwitmac–Awiri–Asalim Road, saying the government investment will transform trade, improve farmers’ access to markets and strengthen economic links between Dokolo and neighbouring districts.
The Minister of State for Local Government, Hon. Justine Namere Nsubuga, is expected to visit Dokolo today, July 17, 2026, to officiate at the launch of the construction of the government road under the Rural Development and Food Security (RUDSEC) Project.
The 12.7-kilometre road is a key connection route linking Dokolo to Kalaki, Kaberamaido, Alebtong and Lira districts, opening up opportunities for increased movement of goods, services and people across the region.
Akech said the project comes as a major relief to residents, especially farmers who have for years struggled with high transport costs and difficulties accessing profitable markets due to the poor condition of the road.
She noted that once completed, the road will enable farmers to easily transport their produce to major markets in Lira, Alebtong, Kalaki and Kaberamaido, while also encouraging business growth along the corridor.
“People of Dokolo have suffered because of the poor state of this road. Our farmers have been producing, but taking their produce to markets has been a challenge. A better road will create new business opportunities and improve household incomes,” Akech said.
The RDC said the government investment demonstrates commitment to putting development resources closer to the people and improving rural infrastructure that supports economic growth.
She added that improved connectivity will reduce travel time, lower transport costs and make it easier for traders, farmers and other service providers to operate across the connected districts.
The launch is part of government’s wider efforts to improve rural road networks and support agricultural transformation by linking communities to markets and essential services.
Meanwhile, Namere is also expected to launch the Kalongo–Agweng–Barlonyo–Akano–Lwala Road in neighbouring Lira District, measuring 16.3 kilometres, under the same project.
