Ugandan football enthusiasts have reason to rejoice as Mandela National Stadium-Namboole regains its status as an international venue, courtesy of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) granting approval for hosting international matches.



The road to reinstating Namboole Stadium’s hosting privileges has been paved with diligence and determination by the Ugandan Football Association (FUFA). FUFA’s commitment was evident in the successful conduct of two test matches at the stadium, showcasing its preparedness to meet the stringent standards set by CAF.

With CAF’s nod of approval, the Uganda Cranes can now look forward to playing their crucial FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying fixtures against Botswana and Algeria on home turf next month. This marks a significant shift for the national team, which had been compelled to play its international fixtures away from home due to the absence of a suitable venue.

Col Peter Kidemuka, the Project Engineer overseeing renovations, has been instrumental in spearheading efforts to address these challenges promptly. With the imminent arrival of ordered floodlights, Namboole Stadium is well on its way to meeting CAF’s stringent requirements.

Decolus Kiiza, FUFA’s Deputy CEO in Charge of Football, has been actively engaged in negotiations with CAF to ensure adherence to revised completion timelines. These discussions underscore FUFA’s unwavering commitment to ensuring Namboole Stadium’s compliance with international standards.
