Soroti, Uganda | Police in Soroti City have arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of a mobile money operator during an armed robbery that has sent shockwaves through the community.
The victim, Kokunda Patricia, 32, was attacked at about 4:40am on Thursday along Station Road near Goalman Supermarket at the Teso Coach stop.
She later died at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where she had been rushed in critical condition.
According to East Kyoga regional police, the case was registered at Soroti Central Police Station under reference CRB 47/2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Patricia had boarded a taxi heading to Ocorimongin Cattle Market in Katakwi District when armed assailants riding a motorcycle without a registration number intercepted the vehicle.
The attackers reportedly forced her out, robbed her of an undisclosed amount of money, and shot her multiple times.
Police said officers responded promptly, secured the scene, and collected key evidence, including CCTV footage from cameras along Moroto Road near the scene of crime.
“The footage has been instrumental in advancing our investigations,” a police source said.
Authorities confirmed that two suspects have since been arrested and are in custody, assisting with ongoing inquiries.
Police added that operations are underway to apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the attack and to recover the stolen cash and firearm used.
The Uganda Police Force condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence, and urged the public to remain vigilant, especially those handling cash transactions.
Eye witnesses said the attack occurred in full view of a street surveillance camera, a development that has heightened anxiety among residents and traders in Soroti City.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of violent robberies targeting mobile money operators and businesspersons, raising fresh concerns over security in urban centres.
