Addis Ababa, Ethiopia | H.E. Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, Uganda’s Head of Mission and Permanent Representative to the African Union, recently held a cordial meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), reaffirming the strong partnership between Uganda and international stakeholders in advancing refugee protection and durable solutions across the continent.
During the meeting, the UNHCR Representative commended Uganda for its globally recognized and inclusive refugee policy, describing it as a model that reflects the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and aligns closely with UNHCR’s vision for sustainable solutions to forced displacement.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in addressing the growing challenges of displacement across Africa, while exploring opportunities to enhance refugee inclusion, self-reliance, and access to essential services. Both parties acknowledged the importance of collective action in supporting displaced populations and host communities amid evolving humanitarian challenges.
Ambassador Otengo reiterated Uganda’s longstanding commitment to providing protection and opportunities for refugees, noting that the country’s progressive approach continues to demonstrate the values of solidarity, shared responsibility, and human dignity. Uganda remains one of Africa’s leading refugee-hosting nations and has consistently championed policies that enable refugees to live, work, and contribute meaningfully to their host communities.
The engagement further highlighted the vital role of partnerships between governments, regional institutions, and humanitarian organizations in delivering lasting solutions for displaced persons across the continent.
As Africa continues to address the complex realities of forced displacement, the meeting underscored a shared commitment to advancing practical and sustainable responses that promote resilience, inclusion, and development for refugees and host communities alike.
The exchange concluded with a mutual reaffirmation of the importance of continued collaboration in pursuit of the African Union’s vision of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, where vulnerable populations are protected and empowered to rebuild their lives with dignity.
