The Lango Cultural Foundation is bracing itself for a highly contested Wonnyaci Election, as six prominent leaders compete for the paramount chief position. The election, set to take place in the coming months, follows a disputed March 1, 2024, election that sparked widespread criticism.
The six contenders, each with their unique vision and qualifications, are:
- Prof. Dr. Richard Nam: Clan Head/Awitong of Okii Amat Clan, emphasizing electoral independence and constitutional adherence.
- Benjamin Okii: Clan Head/Awitong of Okii Bura Clan, highlighting his cultural leadership experience and commitment to transparency.
- Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul: Clan Head/Awitong of Palacol Clan, bringing diplomatic expertise to the table.
- Dr. Dan Okello: Clan Head/Awitong of Guna Clan, focusing on leadership skills and community development.
- George Rashid Opio: Clan Head/Awitong of Malakwanga Clan, prioritizing cultural integrity and accountability.
- Patrick Abal: Clan Head/Awitong of Arak Ongoda Clan, rounding out the field with a strong youth following and innovative approach.
The March 1, 2024, election of Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune was widely criticized for alleged irregularities and lack of transparency. The Lango community demands a free and fair election, sparking a heated debate on social media and community forums.
Apac District RDC Abdul George has come under fire for his comments on the election, with many viewing them as an attempt to intimidate and influence the outcome. Prof. Dr. Richard Nam and Benjamin Okii have publicly spoken out against George’s comments, calling for him to respect the electoral process and the will of the Lango people.
Benjamin Okii, addressing a rally in Lira, stated: “We will not be intimidated or deterred from our pursuit of justice and fairness. The Lango people deserve a leader who will prioritize their needs and interests.”
Prof. Dr. Richard Nam, speaking at a press conference, added: “The Lango Cultural Foundation must adhere to its constitution and respect the democratic process. Any attempts to manipulate or undermine the election will be met with resistance.”
