Alebtong, Uganda – The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Alebtong, Lameck Ongom, has emphasized the need for all schools to actively engage students in patriotism training programs, in line with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s directive of nurturing disciplined, knowledgeable, and responsible citizens.
Speaking during a patriotism training session at Anara Primary School in Aloi Sub-county on April 16, 2025, Ongom urged school leaders to take patriotism seriously and make it part of their routine school programs.
He reminded them that the President’s vision is to see young people equipped with values that foster national development and unity.
“President Museveni wants every school to ensure that students take part in patriotism. This is important in developing discipline, removing ignorance, and helping the children understand their role in the country’s future,” Ongom stated.
He noted that patriotism programs help shape students’ mindsets, boost physical fitness, promote national pride, and equip them with leadership skills from an early age.
He also encouraged parents to support these initiatives even while the children are on school holidays.
Ongom expressed concern that some schools were neglecting patriotism activities, either by failing to allocate time for it or treating it as an optional exercise.
He strongly cautioned against such negligence, urging teachers and administrators to prioritize the program.
“I want to make this clear – any school that refuses to involve its students in patriotism will face action. We shall arrest and charge the headteachers and other responsible officials,” Ongom warned.
He further advised teachers to be careful and supportive when organizing these activities to ensure students benefit both physically and mentally.
He called on local leaders and education stakeholders to monitor and report schools that are not complying with the government’s guidelines on patriotism training.
The patriotism program, run by the Office of the President through RDCs and school patriotism clubs, is designed to instill love for the country, civic responsibility, and moral uprightness among students.
