Lira City, June 26, 2024 – The highly anticipated construction of the Akii Bua Memorial Stadium in Lira City is set to begin in July, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s sports infrastructure development. The stadium, named after legendary athlete John Akii Bua, will be built by Samco Company Ltd, an Egyptian firm, in collaboration with K & J Engineers Associates Ltd and EPSC Associates.
The construction of the stadium fulfills a presidential pledge to develop sports infrastructure in Uganda. The project has received significant government support, with a substantial funding package of 100 billion UGX allocated to kick-start the project.
Two surveyors from Samco Company Ltd have arrived in Lira City to survey the land and oversee the construction works. The surveyors will be in Lira for a week, conducting essential surveys to ensure the ground’s suitability for the stadium.
The Akii Bua Memorial Stadium will be a state-of-the-art sports facility that meets international standards. The stadium will have a large seating capacity and feature modern amenities. The project is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The construction of the stadium is expected to boost the local economy, create jobs, and promote sports tourism in the region. The stadium will also provide a modern venue for sports and community events, honouring John Akii Bua’s legacy and nurturing future sports talents in Uganda.
