Lira – City – 25th June 2024 –Lira City West was left reeling in shock yesterday afternoon after a devastating motorcycle accident claimed the life of an unidentified rider. The tragic incident occurred on June 24, 2024, at approximately 1520 hours on Ojwina Division Road, leaving the community in mourning.
According to eyewitnesses, the motorcyclist was travelling at a high speed from Jinja Camp to Junior Quarters through Ojwina Division Road when the accident occurred. The rider, operating a TVS Star red motorcycle with registration number UFJ 619G, failed to reduce speed when approaching a hump, lost control, and fell off the motorcycle.
The victim was rushed to Charis Clinic, where medical officers on duty pronounced them dead. The body remains at the clinic pending transfer to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary for postmortem examination.
The police were quick to respond to the scene, with the traffic team from Lira-City West Division visiting the area to investigate the incident. The motorcycle has been impounded at Lira-City West Police Station yard for further inspection.
SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, and Public Relations Officer for North Kyoga Region, issued a statement urging motorcycle riders to exercise caution while using the roads and adhere to road safety rules and regulations to prevent such incidents.
The tragic accident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, with many calling for increased road safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The police are currently investigating the incident, and the traffic team is working to determine the exact cause of the accident.
