Lira Regional Referral Hospital has warned newly inducted medical interns against extorting money from patients and their caregivers, urging them to uphold professionalism, integrity and accountability throughout their training.
The warning was issued on Monday, August 31, 2026, during the induction and orientation of 40 interns who have joined the hospital for the 2026/2027 one-year internship programme.
Senior Executive Consultant (SEC) who doubles as the Hospital Director Dr Andrew Odur told the interns that their primary responsibility is to ensure patients receive timely, safe and quality healthcare services.
He cautioned them against unethical practices, particularly demanding money from patients and their caregivers, saying such conduct undermines public trust in health workers.
Dr Odur also urged the interns to remain focused, committed and willing to learn, describing internship as an important foundation for their professional growth.
“Internship lays a strong foundation for your professional growth. Seize this opportunity, invest your time, focus and learn as much as possible,” he told the interns.
He further warned them against substance abuse and other behaviours that could compromise their professional conduct and future careers.
Dr Odur said professionalism, accountability, patient-centred care, timely service delivery and clean and safe working environments are essential to quality healthcare.
The Senior Principal Nursing Officer, Sister Beatrice Akello, urged the interns to communicate effectively and treat patients and caregivers with respect and dignity.
She also emphasised teamwork and proper handover of patients between health workers and shifts to ensure continuity of care.
The 40 interns comprise medical doctors, nurses and pharmacists.
At the end of the orientation, the interns took the professional oath, pledging to uphold patient confidentiality, maintain professional conduct and observe the principle of doing no harm.
