Kampala, Uganda – Lubaga Hospital has officially announced the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the 37-year-old Member of Parliament for Kawempe North.
In a statement released by the hospital’s management, Hon. Ssegirinya was confirmed to have passed away today, Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 12:10 pm, despite intensive medical efforts to save his life.

Hon. Ssegirinya had been battling health challenges for over two years, a struggle that began during his incarceration in Kigo Prison.
In 2021, Ssegirinya and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana were arrested in connection with a series of attacks in the Masaka Sub-region.
The charges, widely regarded as politically motivated, saw the two legislators jailed for over a year.
Following his release on bail in February 2023, Ssegirinya’s health rapidly declined, requiring specialized treatment in Uganda, Kenya and the Netherlands.
His passing leaves a deep void in Ugandan politics, particularly in Kawempe North, where he was known as a tireless advocate for his constituents.
Ssegirinya, often referred to as “Mr. Updates,” was celebrated for his innovative approach to public service and his unrelenting commitment to addressing the needs of the underprivileged.
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, described his death as a great loss to the nation, urging Ugandans to remember Ssegirinya’s dedication to service.
National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu said, “We have lost not only a leader but a brother and a friend who gave everything to fight for justice and equality.”
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
