Man Commits Suicide in Amolatar After Alleged Humiliation Over Failed Relationships

Amolatar, Uganda  A man identified as Opolot Thomas, a resident of Nakituba “A” Village in Muntu Sub-county, Amolatar District, has died by suicide in what authorities suspect was a result of emotional distress linked to repeated relationship failures.

According to preliminary police investigations, the incident occurred between the evening of Thursday, April 10, and the morning of Friday, April 11, 2025.

Opolot was last seen at a local drinking spot in Muntu Township, where he reportedly expressed intentions to end his life due to mockery from locals who ridiculed him for not having a wife.

Witnesses told police that Opolot, who previously separated from two different partners, appeared disturbed and mentioned several times that he was going to kill himself.

His brother, Olobo, found him at home later that evening drinking and in possession of a rope, which he confiscated and reported to their father.

Unfortunately, the warnings were not taken seriously.

On Friday morning at around 6:00 AM, Opolot was discovered hanging from a mango tree, approximately 8 meters from his house.

The scene was attended to by officers from Muntu Police Station, who documented evidence and recovered a piece of cloth suspected to have been used in the act.

The rope earlier taken from him was also retrieved from the father and preserved as part of the investigation.

The body was handed over to the family for burial.

Police have recorded statements from relatives and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

North Kyoga Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema expressed concern over the growing number of suicide cases in the region, urging individuals facing psychological or emotional challenges to seek help from trusted persons or authorities.

“These are avoidable deaths. We urge the public to pay close attention to the mental health of their loved ones and not dismiss such threats lightly,” SP Okema said.

The tragic incident underscores the urgent need for mental health awareness and community support in addressing emotional struggles.
