Soroti, Uganda – Dr. Jacob Odongo, a 49-year-old resident of Dodoi, Kamacha Sub-county in Kumi District, has died in a head-on collision at Awoja Bridge on the Soroti-Mbale highway early Sunday morning.
The accident, which happened at 12:20 am, involved a Kakise Bus Company Isuzu bus (UAZ 415X) and a Toyota Hilux double cabin (UAJ 660D).
According to East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Damali Nachuha, preliminary reports indicate that Dr. Odongo was driving towards Soroti when he lost control of his vehicle after crossing the bridge, veering into the path of the oncoming bus driven by Stanley Ochen.
The impact was fatal, and Dr. Odongo died on the spot. His passenger, 21-year-old Martha Atai, sustained injuries and was rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police have transferred Dr. Odongo’s body to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The damaged vehicles have been taken to Central Police Station (CPS) Soroti for inspection by traffic experts to establish the cause of the accident.
RPC Nachuha has urged motorists to exercise caution, especially in high-risk areas like Awoja Bridge. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
