Oyam, Uganda – A reformed gang in Oyam Town Council, known as the Kampala Boys, is on the brink of collapse after struggling to sustain its operations.
This follows a donation of 300 broilers by Oyam North Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Eunice Apio Otuku, which the group could not maintain due to financial and logistical constraints.
The trouble came to light on Friday when members of the Kampala Boys, a group of reformed former gang members, decided to share the broilers among themselves after failing to provide adequate care for the birds.
Each of the 35 members received five broilers, a decision made to ensure they didn’t go to waste.
According to Dilish Okello, the vice-chairperson of the group, the decision was made because they were unable to properly feed and care for the broilers.
The broilers were initially donated to the group on September 17, 2024, as part of an empowerment initiative by Dr. Apio Otuku, aimed at helping members of the Kampala Boys to improve their livelihoods.
Bonny Amoki, the group’s patron, explained that the decision to divide the broilers among members came after the premises used by the group were hired out to the Electoral Commission for election-related activities.
Isaac Ojok, also known as Izoo, a prominent figure within the group, expressed disappointment over the situation.
Kampala Boys, originally a group of reformed criminals, was established to provide its members with opportunities for economic improvement and reintegration into society.
The group has been participating in various economic activities to improve their livelihoods, but the recent setbacks highlight the challenges they face in maintaining their efforts.
The collapse of the broiler initiative is a significant blow to the group and questions are being raised about the sustainability of such empowerment projects without consistent support and proper management.
The future of Kampala Boys hangs in the balance as they continue to face internal divisions and resource shortages.
