Lira, Uganda – The Lango Gospel Outreach Ministry (LAGOM) is set to host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Truth Evangelistic Fountain Ministry in Lira City.
The event promises to bring together students, parents, alumni, and well-wishers in a day filled with insightful discussions, exhibitions, and a focus on career guidance and spiritual mentorship.
Established in 1996 at Makerere University by prominent figures such as Bishop Rev. James Okalo Ekwang, Bishop George Otaka, and Commissioner Joseph Engol, LAGOM has grown into a vital network supporting students from the Lango Sub-region.
The ministry operates in seven universities across Uganda, including Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Kampala International University, and Lira University.
Jane Francis Bua, who’s the chair LAGOM, a highly regarded figure in Lira, delivered an impassioned speech, urging young people to embrace their roles as agents of transformation in their communities.
“Youth are the backbone of our nation’s development,” she declared. “You hold the power to create positive change, but this can only be achieved through unity, hard work, and a commitment to your faith. Our generation faces challenges, but they are not insurmountable if we hold strong to God’s principles and actively seek innovative solutions.”
Jane Francis Bua emphasized the importance of leveraging modern opportunities to uplift communities.
“In today’s world, digital tools can amplify your voices and talents. Use them responsibly to advocate for good governance, connect with opportunities, and support each other’s growth. Above all, let us be the leaders God calls us to be—leaders who serve, inspire, and act with integrity.”
Pastor Michael Opio, the Patron of LAGOM, emphasized the organization’s mission to mentor students, provide spiritual fellowship, and guide young people to excel academically and professionally.
“LAGOM is a midwife for great callings and destinies, helping students to remain focused on their studies and grounded in their faith,” he said.
The AGM will begin with a citywide parade featuring a marching band at 9 a.m., followed by a marketplace exhibition showcasing work from various universities.
This session will include information desks where university representatives will provide guidance on campus life, course selection, and career planning.
The main meeting, scheduled for the afternoon, will address key topics, including LAGOM’s strategies for expanding its impact in 2025. Discussions will also focus on the role of mentorship in shaping the next generation of leaders.
This year’s AGM has a strong emphasis on career development. Pastor Opio noted that parents and students often lack a clear understanding of university life and the job market.
The event will feature alumni, lecturers, and professionals who will provide practical advice on course selection and career pathways.
“Students need to plan early and make informed decisions about their education. Our goal is to bridge the knowledge gap and prevent young people from making avoidable mistakes,” said Pastor Opio.
Ojok Hagai, an alumnus who led the LAGOM ministry at Kyambogo University, described the organization as a “free school of ministry” that equips students with leadership skills and a strong support network.
“LAGOM opened doors for me both spiritually and professionally. It’s a community where students share resources, support each other, and grow together,” he said.
Reverend James Okalo Ekwang of Truth Evangelistic Fountain Ministry, another key speaker, highlighted LAGOM’s impact in promoting righteousness and community values among young people.
“Our mission is to raise leaders who are grounded in faith and capable of navigating the challenges of modern life,” he said.
Parents, high school graduates, university students, and well-wishers are encouraged to attend this transformative event.
“This is an opportunity for young people to learn, network, and find guidance on their academic and spiritual journeys,” said Pastor Opio.
LAGOM remains committed to empowering youth through mentorship, fellowship, and community engagement, ensuring that students from the Lango region achieve their full potential.
