Soroti, Uganda | Soroti District Council has approved a Shs 35.8 billion budget for the Financial Year 2025/2026, with education and health sectors receiving the largest allocations.
The budget, passed during a council sitting on May 15 at the district boardroom, is a drop from the Shs 39 billion approved in the 2024/2025 financial year.
According to the breakdown, Shs 29.7 billion will come from central government transfers, Shs 4.8 billion from donor support, Shs 924 million from other government transfers, and Shs 700 million in local revenue. Discretionary transfers stand at Shs 39.2 billion.
The Education department has been allocated Shs 14.8 billion, while Health follows with Shs 5.3 billion. Other sectors will benefit from investments in classrooms, school furniture, health infrastructure, roads, and water points.
Samuel Eyangu, the Secretary for Finance, attributed the budget reduction to a drop in indicative planning figures and local revenue performance.
Council Speaker Stephen Olebe said the budget will boost service delivery and warned councillors against using it for political leverage.
Rose Tino, the councillor representing Tubur Sub-county and Town Council, highlighted key planned projects, including classroom construction and road works.
Resident District Commissioner Paul Eseru lauded the council for the swift passage of the budget, describing it as a step towards improving the livelihoods of Soroti residents.
