Uganda People’s Congress Mourns the Passing of Dr. Henry Opiote, Former Personal Physician to Dr. Apolo Milton Obote

Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) is mourning the death of Dr. Henry Opiote, who served as a personal physician and aide to the late former President Dr. Apolo Milton Obote.

In a heartfelt message, the party extended its condolences to the family of Dr. Opiote, the UPC fraternity and friends, acknowledging the loss of a respected pillar in Ugandan society.

During a press briefing held at the UPC headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Sharon Arac Oyat, the party’s spokesperson, described Dr. Opiote as a dedicated and hardworking professional who served diligently during his tenure.

Dr. Opiote played a crucial role in the 1980 general elections, where UPC emerged victorious, leading to Dr. Obote’s swearing-in as President on December 15, 1980.

Opiote was subsequently appointed as Obote’s personal physician and aide, a role he executed with unwavering commitment and professionalism.

Throughout his service, Dr. Opiote was entrusted with numerous high-profile responsibilities, including diplomatic assignments outside Uganda.

He was also instrumental in supporting Ugandan refugees, offering medical assistance and providing hope to those in difficult circumstances.

His humanitarian efforts extended to offering free medical consultations to his immediate community, earning him immense respect and admiration.

Even after the passing of Dr. Obote in 2005, Dr. Opiote remained loyal to the Obote family, volunteering his services to Mama Miria Kalule Obote when she assumed the UPC presidency in 2005.

His contributions were pivotal in the party’s rebuilding efforts ahead of the 2006 general elections.

Dr. Opiote’s death marks the end of an era for UPC, as the party bids farewell to one of its most dedicated members who remained committed to its cause until his last breath.

The family of Dr. Apolo Milton Obote and Adwong Pilipo Obote have announced that Dr. Henry Opiote will be laid to rest in Apac Municipality.
