Apac, Uganda Police in Apac District have arrested a UPDF officer accused of fatally shooting a 25-year-old man following a dispute at a bar.

RA 255575 Pt Amali Jacob, 26, attached to the 101 Battalion in Lacekocot Detach, Pader District, is alleged to have shot and killed Okullo Haggai, a resident of Atek Village in Chegere Sub-County.

The incident occurred today at 4:00 am at Acan Pe Nino Bar in Kidilani Trading Centre.

Jacob, who had reportedly left his post in Pader and returned to his home in Kwoyo ‘A’ Village, was drinking with friends when a disagreement over a woman, Auma Winnie, turned violent.

Witnesses say Jacob initially left the bar but returned armed with a gun and allegedly shot Haggai.

The Uganda Police Force has registered a case of murder by shooting at Apac Central Police Station.

Officers from the District CID and canine unit visited the crime scene, collected witness statements and detained Jacob.

The firearm used in the crime remains missing, as Jacob has refused to disclose its location.

Two additional individuals, Auma Winnie and Jacob’s friend Olila, who was present at the scene, have also been arrested to assist in the investigation.

The victim’s body has been taken to Apac Main Hospital for a postmortem examination.

This marks the second murder by shooting in Apac District within a week.

Jacob has a history of misconduct, including serving time in Kinene Prison for assaulting his commander before his release in September 2024.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson, condemned the incident as a senseless act of violence.

“This is a very unfortunate incident, and it is the second murder by shooting we have recorded in Apac District in just one week,” Okema stated.

Police assured the public of a thorough investigation and confirmed coordination with the UPDF to have Jacob tried in a court-martial.

Investigations are ongoing as police strive to ensure justice for the victim and his family.
