Alebtong, Uganda – A growing wave of house fires has left residents of Omoro Sub-County, Alebtong District and neighboring areas in fear and uncertainty.

Speaking to our news desk on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Local Council Three (LC3) Chairperson for Omoro Sub-County, Isaac Apenyo, confirmed that 13 grass-thatched houses in Adyang Village have been reduced to ashes in a week-long spree of destruction.

Apenyo revealed that the affected homes belonged to Tom Okwir, Alex Okwany and a woman identified as Jenti, among others.

He estimated that the damages amounted to approximately UGX 30 million.

“Last weekend alone, over eight houses were burnt, forcing residents to live in fear and uncertainty. People are even contemplating abandoning the area,” Apenyo said.

He called upon spiritual leaders, cultural elders and government officials to intervene and support efforts to address the escalating crisis.

In response to the alarming situation, a joint prayer session was organized today in Adyang Village, Abukamola Parish.

Authorities, including the District Police Commander (DPC) of Alebtong, have also stepped in to bolster security in the affected communities.

The crisis is not confined to Omoro Sub-County. Isaac Opio Opeo, Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Otuke District, confirmed similar incidents in Ogwete Sub-County, where over 14 grass-thatched houses have been destroyed.

Last month, a series of house fires also ravaged homes in Angetta Sub-County, Alebtong District.

Residents suspect arson but lack clarity about the perpetrators or their motives.

The widespread destruction of homes has left affected families struggling to rebuild their lives.

Many have lost not just shelter but also household items and food stores, worsening their vulnerability.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. However, the growing pattern of these incidents underscores the need for concerted efforts to address the root causes and restore safety to the affected areas.

Efforts are underway to ensure that the residents’ security is guaranteed. Meanwhile, calls for greater support, including relief aid for the affected families, continue to mount.

This unfolding tragedy has left a once-peaceful rural community grappling with uncertainty, with prayers and action now their greatest hope.
