By Alele Ronald

Kaberamaido, Uganda – As the Christmas season approaches, His Royal Highness Papa Raphael Otaya, the cultural leader of the Kumam tribe, has made a heartfelt appeal for a crime-free and peaceful festive season in Uganda.

Speaking in Kaberamaido District on December 10, 2024, Otaya urged Ugandans to embrace values of peace, love, sharing, and responsible living during the celebrations.

In his address, Otaya expressed concern over the rise in crimes such as theft, domestic violence, reckless driving, and family separations that often mar the festive season.

He prayed for Ugandans to spend the season in harmony, prioritizing family unity and wise financial management.

“Let this Christmas be one of peace, sharing, and love. Let us avoid reckless actions that lead to unnecessary suffering,” he urged.

Christmas, celebrated annually on December 25, is a time when Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, believed to be the Saviour of the world.

Otaya’s message resonates with the core values of the season—hope, joy, and redemption. It also aligns with the teachings of goodwill, unity, and compassion that Jesus Christ symbolizes.

However, the festive season in Uganda often witnesses a surge in crimes due to heightened economic activity and social pressures. Crimes such as theft, domestic violence, and drunk driving peak during this time, casting a shadow over the celebrations.

Authorities have noted that common crimes during the Christmas period include theft in markets and public spaces, fraudulent schemes exploiting unsuspecting shoppers, and domestic conflicts fueled by alcohol and financial stress. Road accidents caused by drunk driving and over-speeding also rise significantly.

Otaya emphasized the importance of personal responsibility and vigilance to mitigate these risks.

“Families must remain united and prioritize safety. Let us protect our children, avoid unnecessary conflicts, and ensure that Christmas is a time of joy for everyone,” he said.

The Kumam, a small ethnic group residing in north-eastern Uganda, have historically upheld strong community values.

Known for their vibrant cultural music, agricultural heritage, and social harmony, the Kumam are an example of resilience despite challenges such as poverty, marginalization, and limited access to education.

Otaya’s message reflects the Kumam values of unity and cultural pride, urging Ugandans to emulate these principles during Christmas.

As the nation prepares for Christmas, Otaya’s message is a timely reminder to prioritize safety and moral values over material pursuits.

He concluded his address with a powerful prayer: “May God grant us a Christmas free of crime and filled with love and peace. For God and My Country.”

His call to action challenges all Ugandans to foster a culture of compassion and responsibility, ensuring that the true spirit of Christmas prevails across the nation.
