Lira City – In a significant address to the media fraternity yesterday, 16th June 2024, Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, the Wonyaci Elect, called upon Lango journalists and radio presenters to prioritize truthfulness and professionalism in their reporting. The meeting, held at his residence in Senior Quarters, Lira City, sought to explore ways in which journalism can foster the development of the Lango culture.
Eng. Dr. Odongo Okune underscored the critical role of journalists in shaping public perception and driving development programs. He emphasized that professional journalism not only enhances societal progress but also has the potential to alleviate poverty among media practitioners. “Professionalism in journalism brings development programs and can even eradicate poverty among journalists,” he stated.
Odongo Okune urged journalists to be vigilant and dedicated in their work, warning against practices that promote divisionism within the Lango community. He highlighted the negative impact of unprofessional journalism on the tribe’s image, cautioning that such actions could tarnish the reputation of the Lango people among other tribes.
The Wonyaci Elect advised journalists to safeguard the secrets of the Lango Cultural Institution and to focus on reporting that brings praise, pride, and glory to the tribe. “Always write accurate news that brings praise, pride, and glory on our tribe,” he urged, noting that positive representation can attract broader support for the Lango Cultural Institution.
He pointed out that journalists from other tribes often showcase their cultural pride and refrain from divisive reporting, suggesting that Lango journalists should adopt a similar approach. Odongo Okune also encouraged media practitioners to pursue further education to enhance their career prospects, promising to assist in securing scholarships and job connections.
During the meeting, journalists voiced their concerns about being used as “stepping stones” and subsequently discarded. They expressed appreciation for Odongo Okune’s recognition and support, which included promises to provide tree seedlings, facilitate scholarships, and assist with job connections.
Wontok/Speaker Willy Omodo Omodo echoed Odongo Okune’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of love and unity in journalism. “Journalism is a gift but should be done with love from each other while putting on that love for the Lango Culture,” Omodo stated. He expressed optimism that the media’s dedication would help shine a positive light on the Lango culture globally.
The meeting also served as an opportunity for journalists to express their gratitude to the Wonyaci Elect for his recent recognition by the Ugandan government. Odongo Okune has been gazetted as the Paramount Chief of Lango, with his coronation scheduled for November 2, 2024. The journalists pledged to work collaboratively to ensure the coronation is a colourful and memorable event.
