Soroti, Uganda | The Soroti Chief Magistrate’s Court will deliver its ruling on May 29, 2025, on the bail application of twelve individuals accused in connection with the burning of Jozan Nursery and Primary School, as calls grow for a fair and timely judicial process.

The suspects have remained on remand since their arrest and were charged alongside Soroti City Woman MP, Hon. Joan Alobo, who was granted bail earlier.

The prosecution alleges that the group was involved in a coordinated act that led to the destruction of the school located in Soroti City East Division.

Presiding Magistrate Hilda Bakanansa Walaga confirmed on Thursday that the ruling will be delivered in open court.

Defence counsel Moses Okot Bitek Junior, who presented sureties for all twelve accused, argued that his clients pose no flight risk and have fulfilled all legal requirements for bail.

“…This is about the constitutional right to bail. We trust the court will uphold the law and grant them temporary freedom…,” Bitek told journalists.

The case has captured national attention, with civil society organisations and families of the accused urging the judiciary to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure justice is served.

Public interest is expected to be high when the ruling is made at the end of the month.
