Mogadishu, Somalia – The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has on Thursday March 20, 2025 awarded medals of honour to 160 Ugandan police officers in recognition of their dedication and sacrifices in restoring peace and security in Somalia.
The officers, serving under the 12th contingent of the Uganda Formed Police Unit (UFPU-12), were honoured at a ceremony held at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu.
The event was presided over by the acting Head of AUSSOM, Sivuyile Bam, alongside senior officials, including AUSSOM Police Commissioner, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Hillary Sao Kanu.
During the ceremony, Mr. Bam commended the officers for their unwavering commitment despite the high risks involved in peacekeeping.
“This medal parade is a testament to your resilience, dedication, and sacrifices in the fight against Al-Shabaab and the broader peace-building mission under the African Union mission,” he stated.
He emphasized the role of Ugandan officers in restoring law and order, fostering trust with Somali communities, and reinforcing Uganda’s commitment to regional stability.
AIGP Kanu highlighted the critical role played by UFPU-12 since their deployment in April 2024 under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
“The journey of UFPU-12 in Somalia has been one of resilience, discipline, and dedication to duty. Your contributions—ranging from high-risk patrols and protection of key installations to community policing and capacity-building of the Somali Police Force—have been invaluable,” AIGP Kanu remarked.
The Ugandan officers have actively participated in joint operations with the Somali Police Force, contributing to securing major government installations and ensuring the success of Somalia’s electoral process.
Their involvement in VIP protection, high-level event security, and human rights enforcement has further strengthened AUSSOM’s mission.
UFPU-12 Contingent Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Justus Asiimwe, praised the officers for their cooperation with international counterparts, particularly the Nigerian Formed Police Unit.
“We will always cherish the experiences and relationships we have built. No two groups understand each other better than us and Nigeria,” SSP Asiimwe stated.
The ceremony was attended by other senior AUSSOM officials, including:

2. ACP Richard Evans Onyait – Acting AUSSOM Police Operations and FPU Coordinator
3. ACP John Simon – AUSSOM Police Reforms and Restructuring Coordinator
4. Col. Christopher Tumwine Columbus – Deputy Commander of Ugandan troops in Somalia
Uganda is among the key contributors to AUSSOM’s peacekeeping operations, alongside Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
The Formed Police Units (FPUs) play a crucial role in supporting the Somali Police Force, ensuring security during critical events, providing VIP escort services, and mentoring local security forces.
The recognition of UFPU-12 highlights Uganda’s continued commitment to regional peace and security, reinforcing its reputation as a leading contributor to African Union peacekeeping missions.
