Sarah Awor Angweri Sets Sights on Lira City Woman MP Seat, Challenges Ministers

Lira, Uganda – NRM aspirant Sarah Awor Angweri has officially launched her bid for the Lira City Woman MP seat, promising a fierce contest against seasoned politicians as she sets her eyes on victory in the 2026 elections.

Speaking to journalists at Gracious Palace Hotel on March 21, 2025, Awor declared that she is ready to take on her competitors “one by one,” starting with the NRM primaries before advancing to the general election.

“I will deal with the two ministers one by one, starting with the NRM party primaries, then moving on to the final general election. I am determined to win the 2026 general election for Lira City Woman MP,” she said.

Awor’s remarks come amid growing political competition, especially with Hon. Betty Amongi, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, shifting her polling station to Lira City and confirming her candidacy for the Woman MP seat under UPC.

Awor was quick to challenge Amongi’s candidacy, arguing that as the wife of the UPC president, she should instead focus on mobilizing support for her husband rather than contesting herself.

Beyond the political rivalry, Awor outlined her development agenda for Lira City, highlighting key priorities such as: Fast-tracking the industrial park project, advocating for an airport in Lira City, tackling youth unemployment by creating jobs and strengthening unity within the NRM party.

“I am crying for the youth who are struggling because of leaders who have failed to provide employment. They should not undermine me; I will deal with them using my political tactics to win the upcoming 2026 election,” she asserted.

She also revealed that her campaign preparations are well underway, announcing the production of 1,500 campaign shirts to “paint Lira City yellow” as she mobilizes support for President Museveni and the NRM party.

Meanwhile, Hon. Betty Amongi has been actively mobilizing by distributing hand hoes and T-shirts across Lira City.

The Lira City Woman MP seat is expected to be one of the most competitive battles in the 2026 elections with high-profile contenders already in the race.
