Oyam, Uganda – Oyam District has taken a groundbreaking step towards realizing Uganda’s Digitalization Agenda 2030 by equipping all 40 district councilors with modern Samsung Galaxy A9+ tablets.
This landmark initiative, unveiled on Friday, 20th December 2024, underscores the district’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved governance and service delivery.
Delivering the tablets, Ronald Oyuku Dila, the Oyam District ICT Officer, expressed pride in spearheading this digital milestone.
He emphasized that the tablets aim to digitalize council operations, provide councilors with access to critical government resources, and simplify the dissemination of programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and vaccination campaigns.
Oyuku noted that as a pilot district for the Ministry of ICT, Oyam must set an example in adopting digital tools across all government activities.
According to Hon. Benson Walter Dila Oyuku, the LC V Chairperson of Oyam and Awitong of Orupu Dag Anywar Clan, the district allocated UGX 36 million from local revenue for the procurement of the 40 tablets, each costing UGX 900,000.
He lauded the efforts of the District Revenue Officer and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for ensuring the successful execution of the project.
“This is a significant achievement for our district, demonstrating our resolve to embrace technology for better governance,” Hon. Oyuku stated.
Hon. Bili Otoo, representing Otwal Sub-County, showcased the capabilities of the tablets by sharing essential documents, including the Local Government Amendment Acts, the Accounting and Financial Act, and the Uganda National Constitution.
Drawing on his journalism expertise, Hon. Otoo urged his colleagues to embrace the digital era, highlighting the efficiency of Uganda’s first digital census compared to outdated paper-based systems.
Hon. Conny Atoo, the female councilor for Oyam Town Council, echoed these sentiments, expressing her willingness to adapt despite her age.
“This technology is user-friendly and will empower us to access vital information effortlessly,” she said, reaffirming her commitment to supporting Uganda’s digital transformation goals.
This initiative not only equips councilors with the tools to serve their communities better but also positions Oyam as a trailblazer in the adoption of digital solutions.
By enhancing access to information and simplifying government processes, the district is paving the way for improved service delivery and governance.
Oyam District’s proactive approach serves as a beacon of progress, demonstrating how local governments can lead in embracing technology to drive national development as Uganda strives to achieve its Digitalization Agenda 2030.
