Ajuri MP-Elect Jalameso: Snubbing Obua Is Political Suicide, I’ll Work with Government — Rubbishes ‘Invisible Hands’ Claims

Alebtong, Uganda | Ajuri County Member of Parliament-elect Fred Jalameso has said working in Parliament without consulting Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua would be politically “suicidal,” underscoring his intention to cooperate with the NRM-led government despite being a member of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).

Speaking on QFM’s Yite Twolo Morning Updates, Jalameso said his priority in Parliament will be service delivery rather than opposition politics, arguing that Ajuri County in Alebtong District urgently needs unity and pragmatic leadership.

“I belong to the opposition party, UPC, but I am not going to Parliament to oppose government. I am going there to work with the government led by NRM,” Jalameso said, adding that collaboration is critical for areas facing deep development challenges.

Using a medical analogy, the MP-elect described the state of the constituency as dire. He said that while doctors would say Ajuri needs resuscitation, politically the area needs a paradigm shift. He cautioned residents to manage expectations, noting that not all problems can be solved within a single five-year term.

Jalameso dismissed allegations that his campaign was bankrolled by “invisible hands,” particularly individuals linked to government, saying his victory was achieved through popular support.

When asked by host James Omara Elem to assess the legacy of his predecessor, Jalameso said it would be unfair and malicious to claim that Obua did nothing during his three terms in Parliament.

He cited the increase in subcounties from three to seven and the extension of power grids in the constituency as some of the tangible achievements.

The MP-elect said he is seeking mentorship from Obua and described the Government Chief Whip as an asset whose experience will be invaluable.

His remarks followed comments made during Obua’s thanksgiving prayers, where former Aruu County MP aspirant Samuel Odonga Otto said Obua’s “shoes are too big to fit the incoming MP.” Jalameso responded by saying he is ready for the task and should not be underestimated.

Outlining his priorities, Jalameso said he intends to introduce a bursary scheme to support best-performing pupils across Ajuri County.

He also pledged to lobby for improved road infrastructure, particularly in Angeta, which he described as “hard to reach and hard to return,” the establishment of more Health Centre IVs, and the restoration of silted valley dams.

On addressing water shortages, Jalameso said he will raise the matter as one of national importance in Parliament and work with non-state actors, including non-governmental organisations, to supplement government interventions.

Reflecting on his election victory, Jalameso said he felt grateful to God after being declared winner, noting that the declaration had been delayed due to issues in 18 polling stations.

He welcomed Obua’s decision to concede defeat and not challenge the results in court, describing it as a move that promotes peace and stability.
