Lira City, Uganda – In a landmark moment for sports development in Northern Uganda, the construction of the Akii Bua Stadium is set to begin in July 2024, fulfilling a Presidential pledge. The highly anticipated project promises to elevate sports infrastructure in the region and inspire a new generation of athletes.
On 14 June 2024, key dignitaries and stakeholders gathered at the Akii Bua Land for a ceremonial boundary survey, marking the commencement of the stadium’s construction.
The event was attended by Mayor of Lira City, His Worship Sam Atul; Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Lawrence Egole; Ambrose Tasobya from the National Council for Sports; representatives from Samko and Quartor Sports, the contracted construction firms; and various leaders from the Lira City Council.
Mayor Sam Atul welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of utilizing local expertise and resources effectively. “We must ensure that our resources and knowledge are used effectively to build this landmark,” he stressed.
RCC Lawrence Egole highlighted the government’s dedication to completing the project, reaffirming that the construction of the Akii Bua Stadium is a promise made by the president.
Lira District LCV Chairman, RCM Okello Orik, expressed the community’s anticipation and commitment to supporting the initiative. “The Lango people have been eager for this development, and we are hopeful and committed to supporting this initiative,” Orik stated.
Ambrose Tasobya revealed plans for three distinct fields: a football pitch, an athletics track, and a multi-purpose field for other sports activities. Additionally, a significant accommodation facility for players will be constructed on the same land, providing comprehensive support for athletes.
As the ground-breaking date approaches, excitement and expectations surround the Akii Bua Stadium. This development promises to elevate sports in the Lango sub-region, foster local talent, and potentially host significant sports events, putting Lira City on the national and international map.
