Kampala, Uganda | Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among has reaffirmed her support for the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, saying she is proud to have led Parliament in passing the law and urging African leaders to enact legislation that safeguards cultural values.
Among made the remarks on February 11, 2026, while meeting a delegation of parliamentarians from Ghana led by Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako at Parliament.
She said that despite being sanctioned by the United States and the United Kingdom governments over the law, she remained firm in her commitment to defending African traditions and sovereignty.
According to Among, some foreign and local actors have opposed efforts to preserve African culture and moral values, but Uganda has continued to stand its ground through home-grown solutions.
She explained that when Parliament passed the Anti-Homosexuality law, she was sanctioned, but this had not discouraged her, adding that she remained proud of her role in the process.
The Speaker noted that Parliament had acted in the interest of society, especially young people, by passing legislation aimed at stopping what she described as the promotion of homosexuality in schools and other institutions.
Among added that although the law had attracted criticism and sanctions from abroad, it had strengthened unity within the country.
She said the move had resonated with many Ugandans and linked public support for the law to President Yoweri Museveni’s recent electoral performance.
According to her, many voters supported the President because they believed he stood for African values and culture.
The Speaker urged African leaders to prioritise legislation that reflects local traditions and beliefs, saying this would promote self-reliance and strengthen the continent’s independence.
The Ghanaian delegation commended Uganda for promoting parliamentary cooperation and pledged to strengthen ties between the two legislatures.
