Lira City, June 20, 2024 – The Lira Diocese is enveloped in mourning following the death of Rev. Fr. Alberto Reinzer, affectionately known as Ocen Yesu, a stalwart servant of God whose life was dedicated to aiding the poor and marginalized in the community. His passing on June 16, 2024, at Pope John Hospital-Aber has left a profound void among the faithful and the many lives he touched.
Born on October 30, 1934, in the city of Boston, Italy, Rev. Fr. Alberto Reinzer embarked on his missionary journey to Africa in 1952. His commitment to the priesthood was formalized in 1973 when he was ordained. He initially served in the Acholi Sub-region, later moving to the Lango region, where he became a cornerstone of the Aboke Seminary. There, he dedicated himself to nurturing young men aspiring to the priesthood, instilling in them the values of compassion, dedication, and unwavering faith.
Today, at Lira Cathedral, Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok led the congregation in paying tribute to the late priest. In his heartfelt eulogy, Bishop Wanok described Rev. Fr. Reinzer as a tireless worker in God’s vineyard, whose efforts transcended religious and cultural barriers. “The Late Alberto stood firm in his mission to support the needy, never discriminating based on religion or culture while fulfilling God’s work on earth,” Bishop Wanok said.
The Bishop encouraged the mourners to follow the exemplary path laid out by Fr. Reinzer. “Christians should emulate the good example and legacy the Late priest has left behind. His life was a beacon of hope and a model of selfless service that we should all strive to follow.”
In a historic move, Rev. Fr. Reinzer will be the first priest to be interred at the new burial site for priests located in Barogole, Lira City. This new site symbolizes a fresh chapter for the diocese, dedicated to honouring the lives and legacies of its clergy. The burial is scheduled for June 21, 2024, marking a poignant moment for the diocese and the broader community.
The loss of Rev. Fr. Reinzer is deeply felt across the regions he served. His tireless efforts in education, healthcare, and community support have left an indelible mark.
