Dokolo, Uganda – Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok of Lira Diocese has cautioned voters to be vigilant and discerning as political campaigns intensify ahead of the 2026 elections.
Speaking during the commissioning of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Agwata Town Council, Dokolo District, Bishop Wanok urged the public to reject politicians who exploit voters through lies, bribery and empty promises.
He emphasized that true leaders are those who live among the people, understand their struggles and work genuinely to improve their welfare.
“A good leader is one who stays with the people, listens to their needs, and serves selflessly,” Bishop Wanok said. “Be wary of those who come only during election time, handing out alcohol and petty cash to buy your votes. Such leaders do not care about your future.”
The Bishop warned against falling prey to manipulation and urged the community to assess politicians based on their actions rather than their words.
He stressed that leaders who engage in backbiting and division lack the moral authority to guide communities.
“Reject leaders who sow division and spread lies. Instead, support those who unite the community and prioritize the common good,” he advised.
Bishop Wanok’s message resonated with many attendees, as political figures vying for various positions in the 2026 elections were present at the event.
Among them was Joseph Jones Ogwal, an NRM aspirant for Dokolo North County, who pledged 50 bags of cement worth 1.8 million shillings to support church compound works.
Ogwal, is a front runner for Dokolo North MP seat.
Another aspirant, Francis Ojok, donated 200,000 shillings to assist the church in purchasing seats.
The Local Council V Chairperson of Dokolo District, James Otoo Apili, contributed 100,000 shillings on behalf of the district, while Dokolo Woman MP Sarah Aguti Nyangkori promised to provide 100 seats to the church.
Beyond the political undertones, Bishop Wanok’s speech underscored the importance of moral integrity in leadership and the responsibility of voters to elect individuals committed to community development.
During the ceremony, he also administered the sacrament of confirmation to over 300 Christians and ordained nine catechists as extraordinary ministers to assist in offering Holy Communion.
The commissioning event, which drew over 3,000 people, served as both a spiritual celebration and a reminder for voters to remain cautious and demand accountability from those seeking public office.
