Dokolo District Launches Mass Livestock Vaccination Against Foot and Mouth Disease

Dokolo, Uganda Livestock farmers in Dokolo District can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Veterinary Department has launched a mass vaccination campaign to curb the spread of the deadly Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Dr. Patrick Opondo, the District Veterinary Officer, confirmed that the vaccination exercise kicked off on Monday 31, March, 2025, with 20,000 doses distributed across the district.

He emphasized that the initiative, provided free of charge by the government, is crucial in controlling and preventing FMD outbreaks, which pose a significant economic threat to livestock farmers.

He urged them to ensure their animals are brought to designated vaccination points in various parishes to facilitate timely immunization.

As of yesterday, a total of 4,400 doses had already been administered.

Agwata Town Council led the campaign with 1,200 doses, followed by Kwera Sub-County (700), Agwata Sub-County (700), Dokolo Sub-County (700), Adok Sub-County (400), Dokolo Town Council (400) and Amwoma Sub-County (300).

The initiative targets protecting Dokolo District’s estimated 74,000 cattle population.

Meanwhile, Otuke District has received 40,000 doses to vaccinate its estimated 50,000 cattle.

According to the district’s Production Officer, Dr. Thomas Anyuru, their vaccination exercise commenced today.

The vaccination drive, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, aims to safeguard livestock health and improve farmers’ livelihoods by preventing economic losses caused by FMD.
