Lira, Uganda | What began as a community football tournament in Maruzi has evolved into one of Lango Sub-region’s most impactful sports development initiatives, combining talent identification, education support and environmental conservation.

Originally established as the Omer Christmas Cup, the tournament was founded to nurture football talent and strengthen community cohesion within Maruzi. It has since grown into the Dwog Pacu Cup, a regional competition now bringing together teams from all 21 constituencies across Lango Sub-region.

Beyond football, the tournament has embraced broader social objectives, including promoting tree planting and creating opportunities for talented young players to access education and professional exposure.

The inaugural edition of the rebranded Dwog Pacu Cup was held in 2025, with Kyoga Constituency emerging champions. Organisers have confirmed that the second edition will run from June to August 2026, with the winning team set to receive a cash prize of up to Shs9.6 million.

According to Kenneth Kaunda Okwir, the chairperson of the tournament, the competition’s greatest achievements have been realised away from the football pitch.

Okwir said the tournament has so far enabled 105 learners to secure full bursary scholarships in various schools across the country. The beneficiaries include 60 boys and 45 girls, some of whom have already completed Advanced Level education while others continue with their studies.

The scholarship programme is supported through partnerships with several educational institutions, including Muntuyera High School in Ntungamo District, St. Paul Secondary School in Rukungiri District, Sheema Girls Secondary School in Sheema District, Mentor Secondary School in Lira City, Lira Town College and Lira P.7 School.

Tournament organisers identify promising talent during the competition and work closely with partner schools to secure educational opportunities for deserving learners. The initiative has helped many families overcome financial barriers that often hinder children’s access to education.

The Dwog Pacu Cup is sponsored by the Dwog Pacu Foundation in partnership with KK Charm Sports Centre Lira and City Sounds Lira.

As preparations for the 2026 edition gather momentum, organisers say the tournament remains committed to transforming lives through sport, education and environmental stewardship.

From its humble beginnings as a Christmas football competition in Maruzi to a region-wide platform for empowerment, the Dwog Pacu Cup has grown into a symbol of community development, with its impact now measured not only by goals scored but also by lives transformed.
