Lira, Uganda | The security team at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, working in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, on Thursday 26th February, 2026, arrested a man identified as Okello Moses from the female surgical ward for allegedly defrauding a patient’s caregiver of Shs 200,000.
Okello reportedly impersonated a medical officer at the hospital and solicited a total of Shs 500,000, claiming the funds would expedite a medical procedure and surgery for the patient. He allegedly demanded a deposit of Shs 200,000 upfront, with the remaining balance to be paid later.
The caregiver immediately reported the incident to the hospital’s security team, who promptly informed the police. Okello was arrested on the spot after receiving the money.
The matter has been registered at Lira City Central Police Station under reference 32/26/02/2026, with charges of theft of cash and impersonation filed against the suspect.
Hospital management confirmed their commitment to supporting police investigations to ensure justice is served.
Hospital authorities also warned the public that, in February 2026 alone, more than five individuals have been arrested for similar offences.
They emphasised that hospital security operates 24 hours a day, aided by CCTV surveillance, to protect patients, visitors, and hospital assets.
The management urged the public to report any suspicious activities promptly to ensure that Lira Regional Referral Hospital remains a safe environment for all patients and visitors.
