KAMPALA-In a shocking display of deception, more than 100 suspects were apprehended during yesterday’s Martyrs Day celebration at the Anglican and Catholic shrines in Namugongo.
The individuals in question took advantage of the spiritual gathering, posing as ushers in order to steal from unsuspecting pilgrims.
The thieves, donning blue reflector jackets and ushering tags, moved through the crowds collecting offerings, only to pocket phones, money, and national IDs from those who had come to honor the memory of martyrs.
Church leaders, aware of the situation, urged the faithful to exercise caution and only trust those with official red jackets and red bags.
Luke Owoyesigyire, a spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed the reports of theft and assured the public that authorities are taking action to prevent further incidents.
While many were left shaken by the audacity of these criminals, the spirit of Martyrs Day persisted as pilgrims joined together in remembrance.
This unsettling event serves as a potent reminder that even amidst sacred occasions, there are those who seek to exploit the trusting nature of the faithful.
