Kwania, Uganda | More than 300 women, hundreds of learners and farming households in Kwania District are expected to benefit from a new Shs48 million community resilience programme being implemented by Field of Hope, a Christian-based non-governmental organisation.
The three-year initiative will be implemented in Ayabi Town Council and Abongomola Sub-county and is aimed at strengthening food security, climate resilience and agricultural education among communities.
Speaking during the project’s inception meeting, Field of Hope Country Director Walter Okullu said the organisation seeks to empower communities through practical agricultural training, financial literacy and youth-focused programmes.
Okullu said the organisation will train more than 300 women through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to improve household financial management and strengthen economic resilience.
He added that the organisation will also construct two boreholes in the project areas to improve access to clean and safe water.
The programme will further target learners and teachers in selected secondary schools, including Abongomola Seed Secondary School, Inomo Secondary School and Aduku Secondary School, where agricultural education and climate-smart farming practices will be promoted.
Founded in the United States in 2010, Field of Hope established its Uganda operations in 2024 and has since expanded its activities across parts of the Lango sub-region.
Kwania Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Robert Okwanga Alem, who also serves as chairperson of the District NGO Monitoring Committee, said the district was satisfied that the organisation had fulfilled all the necessary legal and operational requirements before commencing its activities.
He noted that the district leadership would continue to monitor the implementation of the programme and assess its impact on communities.
Kwania District Chairperson George Kakoma Akacha welcomed the organisation, describing its interventions as timely and relevant to the needs of local communities.
He said the organisation’s work had already yielded visible results in neighbouring districts, including Otuke, Alebtong, Dokolo, Amolatar, Oyam and Kole.
Akacha pledged support from district leaders to ensure that project benefits reach the intended beneficiaries and urged communities to actively participate in the programme.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner Ceaser Obada commended the contribution of non-governmental organisations to local development and called for stronger collaboration between government institutions and development partners.
He said NGOs continue to play a crucial role in complementing government efforts in areas such as agriculture, education, water access and community empowerment.
The launch of the programme marks a significant addition to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening household resilience and promoting sustainable development in Kwania District.
