Tokyo, JapanIn a historic move, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, today, met with the Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Force, Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida, at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Ichigaya, Tokyo.

This is the first time a Ugandan CDF has visited Japan, a milestone that has been welcomed warmly by the Japanese military leadership.

The meeting, which comes on the heels of a productive encounter earlier this week between Gen. Kainerugaba and Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Fujii Hisayuki, marks a significant step forward in strengthening the defence relations between the two nations.

Minister Fujii had previously reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties, especially in areas like infrastructure, education, and security.

During the meeting with Minister Fujii on Monday, Gen. Kainerugaba expressed Uganda’s gratitude for Japan’s consistent support, particularly in infrastructure development and education.

Uganda has benefitted greatly from Japan’s contributions, which have bolstered the nation’s socio-economic development.

The Ugandan CDF emphasized the need for continued partnership, underlining Uganda’s readiness to collaborate on issues of mutual concern.

Minister Fujii noted Japan’s commitment to expanding its cooperation with African nations, particularly ahead of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), which is scheduled to take place in Yokohama from August 20-22, 2025.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry highlighted the importance of such bilateral engagements in advancing Japan’s Africa policy, and Minister Fujii shared Japan’s aspirations for fostering closer ties with the African continent through sustainable development and peace-building initiatives.

One of the key discussions during both meetings was the evolving international security environment.

In today’s meeting between Gen. Kainerugaba and Gen. Yoshida, the focus shifted to military collaboration, with both sides exploring ways to work more closely together in areas such as training, peacekeeping, and regional security.

The Japanese military expressed enthusiasm at the opportunity to collaborate with Uganda, particularly in peacekeeping missions, which both nations have been actively involved in.

Gen. Kainerugaba’s visit to Japan underscores Uganda’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities and enhancing international military partnerships.

His visit comes as part of Uganda’s broader foreign policy to increase its strategic ties with key international partners.

The meeting has been described as a significant step in Uganda’s military diplomacy, with Gen. Kainerugaba lauding Japan’s leadership in regional and global peace efforts.

The Ugandan CDF’s visit also highlights the growing importance of Uganda as a regional player in African security and its efforts to forge stronger relationships with key global players.

As Uganda continues to strengthen its military and diplomatic ties with Japan, both nations are optimistic about the future of their defence cooperation, especially in light of the challenges facing Africa and the global security environment.
