Health Workers Urged to Treat Patients With Kindness

Dokolo, Uganda | The Supreme Kadhi of the Greater Lango Muslim District, Sheikh Yusuf Balinda, has urged nursing and midwifery students to treat patients with kindness, respect and compassion, saying many people continue to suffer mistreatment at the hands of some health workers.

Balinda made the remarks on Thursday during a dedication ceremony for finalists at Dokolo School of Nursing and Midwifery ahead of the June 2026 Uganda Health Professions Assessment Board (UHPAB) examinations.

Addressing the students, Balinda said healthcare professionals interact with people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and should therefore handle patients with empathy and professionalism. He challenged the future health workers to distinguish themselves through good conduct and quality service delivery.

The religious leader reminded the students that the medical profession is a calling from Allah and should be exercised with utmost care, dedication and integrity. He urged them to uphold high moral standards both at the workplace and in their communities.

Speaking at the same function, the school’s principal, James Komakech, warned the finalists against falling victim to job scammers who often target fresh graduates with false promises of employment opportunities.

Komakech advised the students to verify job offers through the relevant authorities and avoid paying money to individuals claiming to secure jobs on their behalf. He also cautioned them against early marriages and other distractions that could negatively affect their career progression.

He noted that the institution’s goal is not only to prepare students to pass examinations but also to produce responsible health professionals with strong moral values capable of serving communities effectively.

The Academic Registrar, Vivian Emily Acan, encouraged the candidates to pursue higher education after completing their current courses, saying the forthcoming examinations should not mark the end of their academic journey.

She urged them to continuously upgrade their qualifications and skills in order to remain competitive in the health sector.

One of the school’s co-founders, Richard Amen, warned the students against engaging in bad behaviour that could expose them to criminal activities after graduation.

Another co-founder, Charles Eromu, advised the students to put into practice the knowledge and skills acquired during their training wherever they may be deployed after completing their studies.

The chief guest, Melik Asianzu, manager of the DFCU Bank Dokolo branch, described the health profession as a noble career because it involves caring for human life. He urged the students to take their studies seriously and prepare themselves to serve society diligently.

Dokolo School of Nursing and Midwifery was licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports in 2018 and started with an enrollment of only five students. The institution currently has 233 students.

The dedication ceremony was held as nursing and midwifery schools across Uganda prepare candidates for the June 15–26, 2026 UHPAB examinations.
