King Charles III Set to Visit Pope Francis in Vatican Next Month

Rome, Italy – King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to embark on a state visit to Italy and the Vatican from April 7-10, with a key highlight being a meeting with Pope Francis.

Despite the Pope’s recent health concerns, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the visit will proceed as planned, marking a milestone in UK-Vatican and UK-Italy relations.

The King had privately written to Pope Francis during his recent illness, and a Vatican-released photo of the 88-year-old pontiff over the weekend appeared to show him on the path to recovery.

This meeting will serve as a profound moment in bridging the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England, where King Charles holds the role of Supreme Governor.

As part of his Vatican itinerary, King Charles will attend an ecumenical service in the Sistine Chapel. In a historic first, he will also visit the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul’s Outside the Walls, where Saint Paul is buried.

English kings dating back to the Anglo-Saxon era played a significant role in supporting this sacred site, making the King’s visit a powerful symbol of reconciliation and continuity between the two Christian traditions.

Beyond religious diplomacy, the royal visit will reinforce modern ties between the United Kingdom and Italy, reflecting shared cultural, historical, and economic values.

King Charles is set to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and in a groundbreaking moment, he will become the first British monarch to address both houses of the Italian parliament.

A grand state banquet will be held in honor of the royal guests, and military cooperation will be showcased through a spectacular joint flypast over Rome featuring Italy’s air force and the UK’s Red Arrows.

Adding a personal touch to the visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla will be celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary while in Rome.

Ahead of the trip, the King hosted an Italian-themed dinner at Highgrove, featuring a menu inspired by American-Italian actor Stanley Tucci.

The royal couple will also visit Ravenna, where they will pay respects at the tomb of the legendary Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Meanwhile, Queen Camilla will tour a museum commemorating British poet Lord Byron, underscoring the deep cultural ties between the two nations.

This visit is more than just a ceremonial tour—it is a testament to the enduring relationship between the UK, Italy, and the Vatican.

With the Pope’s health in focus, King Charles’ engagement with the Catholic Church signals a commitment to interfaith unity. At the same time, his diplomatic engagements in Italy serve to reinforce Britain’s role on the European and global stage.
