Kitgum, Uganda – With the 48th St. Janani Luwum Day celebrations set for February 16, 2025, Kitgum District finds itself grappling with a cholera outbreak that threatens to overshadow one of Uganda’s most significant annual events.
The commemoration of Archbishop Janani Luwum, a national hero martyred in 1977, is expected to draw thousands of pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.
However, the detection of a cholera case in the district has raised alarm over the potential health risks posed by the large gatherings typically associated with the event.
Speaking on the outbreak, Kitgum District LCV Chairperson Christopher Obol Arwai urged residents to prioritize hygiene and take preventive measures.
“Cholera is a serious threat, especially with the crowds we expect. We must work together to ensure the safety of everyone attending,” he said.
Cholera, a waterborne disease, spreads quickly in environments with poor sanitation and contaminated water supplies.
Given the expected influx of pilgrims, health officials are warning that the risk of an outbreak spreading during the celebrations is high without adequate measures in place.
The Local Organizing Committee has announced a budget of UGX 98 Million to cover the costs of the celebrations, including health and sanitation measures.
While funding efforts are underway, organizers face the dual challenge of managing financial constraints and addressing the cholera threat.
“The health of attendees is our top priority,” said one committee official. “We are working with district authorities and partners to ensure proper hygiene facilities and clean water are available throughout the event.”
Authorities and organizers have laid out a comprehensive plan to mitigate the cholera risk, including:
° Hygiene Facilities: Setting up temporary toilets and handwashing stations to reduce contamination risks.
° Clean Water Supply: Providing safe drinking water through mobile water tanks and bottled water distribution.
° Health Surveillance: Deploying medical teams to monitor and respond to potential cases during the event.
° Community Awareness: Educating the public on preventive measures, such as proper handwashing and avoiding unsafe food and water sources.
St. Janani Luwum Day celebrates the life of Archbishop Luwum, who stood against injustice during Idi Amin’s brutal regime.
His martyrdom in 1977 transformed him into a symbol of faith and resistance. Born in 1922, Luwum’s legacy continues to inspire millions of Ugandans.
The annual celebrations typically include pilgrimages, prayers, and cultural performances, uniting communities in remembrance of his sacrifice.
Despite the cholera outbreak, residents and religious leaders are determined to uphold the sanctity of the occasion.
As Kitgum District prepares for this pivotal event, the focus remains on balancing tradition with safety.
Authorities are optimistic that with sufficient funding and community cooperation, the celebrations can proceed without compromising public health.
