Dokolo, Uganda – Dokolo District Local Government has made a significant stride in addressing compensation for victims of the Lango insurgency by distributing 1,400 additional data cards.
This development, announced by Tonny Odongo Ocen, the Vice Chairperson of Dokolo District, adds to the 1,429 data cards submitted in 2024 to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for approval, bringing the total to 2,592 data cards.
Odongo made the announcement during a press briefing in his office on Thursday January 16, 2025 after the district received the additional data cards on January 14, 2025.
He highlighted that the distribution of the data cards has been extended to all Sub-Counties and Town Councils in the district, ensuring wider reach and accessibility for all eligible claimants.
The sub-counties include Agwata, Adok, Amwoma, Bata, Okwalongwen, Dokolo, Kangai, Kwera, Okwongodul, and Adeknino, while town councils include Bata, Dokolo, Agwata and Kangai.
Each Sub-County Chief received 100 data cards for their respective jurisdictions.
The Vice Chairperson urged claimants to collect their data cards from the offices of Town Clerks and Sub-County Chiefs.
He also emphasized the importance of filling out the data cards correctly to avoid rejection by the Ministry.
Odongo further advised those seeking compensation for deceased relatives to obtain letters of administration and attach them to their submissions.
In a stern warning, Odongo cautioned coordinators of the Lango War Claimants and technical staff at the lower local government level against extorting money from community members.
He reiterated that the distribution of data cards is free of charge and any claims to the contrary should be reported to relevant authorities.
The distribution of these data cards marks a critical step in addressing the grievances of Lango War claimants.
The Vice Chairperson assured the public that the district remains committed to ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery of this process, which seeks to restore justice and dignity to those who suffered during the Lango insurgency.
With the additional data cards now in circulation, the focus shifts to ensuring proper documentation and timely submission to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, which will ultimately determine the compensation eligibility of claimants.
Claimants are encouraged to act promptly, adhere to guidelines, and report any irregularities to local authorities.
