Oyam, Uganda – The festive season is upon the Lango community, but leaders are urging couples to avoid conflicts fueled by Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA).
Although these savings groups were designed to promote a culture of saving and eradicate poverty, they have inadvertently led to family disputes, loan repayment conflicts and even violence.
George Ojwang Opota, the respected Awitong for Omolo Acol Odyek Onywal, emphasized that money should never come between families and neighbors.
“Blood is thicker than water, and no loan is worth causing enmity. We must prioritize unity,” Opota urged.
He further called on VSLA leaders to refrain from damaging property in efforts to recover debts, citing instances where doors and roofs had been destroyed.
Dr. Tonny Opeto, the 2026 parliamentary aspirant for Erute North, echoed these sentiments, encouraging Lango residents to foster solidarity within their VSLAs.
“This festive season, let’s focus on saving for essentials like school fees, healthcare, and family welfare,” Dr. Opeto said.
He also recommended registering VSLAs with local authorities to ensure transparency and avoid conflicts.
Hon. Daudi Odora, Apac District Councilor for Te-boke Sub County, reminded the community to align their association’s constitutions with national laws to prevent legal issues during loan recovery.
“Saving should be purposeful,” he added. “We must focus on sustainable development rather than spending recklessly on luxuries.”
As the year ends, Lango leaders hope the community will use their VSLAs to build a better future—without letting financial disagreements disrupt the festive season.
