Dokolo, Uganda – The festive season in Dokolo Subcounty is alive with energy and excitement as the 2024 Christmas Cup Football Championship unfolds.

Organized under the patronage of Joseph Jones Ogwal, an aspirant for the Dokolo North County parliamentary seat in 2026, the tournament kicked off on December 16 and will run daily until Christmas Day, December 25.
This year’s championship features six parishes—Anangogwec, Abenyo, Alenga, Acanpii, Awiri, and Adagmon—competing in thrilling matches. The daily kick-offs at 4:00 pm have drawn enthusiastic crowds, with the semi-finals set for December 23 and 24 and the grand finale on December 25.

Ogwal’s commitment to empowering the youth through sports has been a cornerstone of his community engagement.
“This tournament is about more than football; it’s about building unity, fostering harmony, and providing opportunities for young people to shine,” he said.
The Christmas Cup is part of a larger sports calendar in Dokolo North. The Independence Cup is held annually in Amwoma, the Easter Cup in Adok, and the New Year Cup in Bata. Ogwal also supports smaller friendly matches to keep youth engaged year-round.
Each participating parish received uniforms, balls, and other essentials, underscoring Ogwal’s dedication to equal participation.

He has also announced plans to expand the tournament to include Bata and Agwata Town Councils in the future.
“This tournament has been a tradition even before the COVID-19 lockdown. By incorporating more subcounties, we can ensure that every youth has a chance to participate,” Ogwal noted.
The Christmas Cup provides not just medals and cash prizes but also an opportunity for young players to display their talent. It has become a beacon of hope for the youth, nurturing unity and sportsmanship.
As the tournament progresses, Dokolo Subcounty eagerly anticipates the final match, where the champions will be crowned in a celebration of talent, unity, and community spirit.
Joseph Jones Ogwal’s initiative continues to leave a lasting impact, reinforcing sports as a powerful tool for community development and youth empowerment.
