Lira City Council Speaker Okwir Declares Bid for NRM Workers League Chair

Lira, Uganda – Console Patrick Okwir, the Speaker of Lira City Council and a lawyer by profession, has today declared his intention to contest for the position of Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Workers League in Lira City.

Okwir made the announcement in an exclusive interview today with Dokolo Post.

He emphasized his commitment to uniting workers, championing lawful representation and strengthening their voice within the party.

“I remain steadfast in advancing unity, lawful representation and workers’ welfare within our great party,” he said.

His campaign slogan – “For Unity. For Workers. For NRM” – underlines his focus on collective progress and empowerment.

Okwir’s declaration adds fresh energy to the internal race for leadership of the NRM Workers League, a key organ that represents workers’ interests and influences labor policy within the ruling party.

In an urban setting like Lira City, the role is critical to bridging the gap between grassroots workers and national leadership.

Currently serving as Speaker of the Lira City Council, Okwir has built a reputation as a principled and professional leader.

His legal background has helped guide the council’s legislative agenda with clarity and consistency.

His experience in governance and policy interpretation is expected to appeal to a wide base of working-class members and professionals within the NRM.

During the interview, Okwir noted that if elected, he will prioritize deeper engagement between the Workers League and worker communities, promote skills development and cooperative-based growth, and advocate for protections for both formal and informal workers.

He also pledged to champion dialogue with trade unions and support job creation programs tailored to local needs, saying that Lira City’s workers deserve more than token representation – they deserve action.

His candidacy brings a mix of legal acumen, leadership experience and grassroots appeal-factors that could redefine how workers engage with party structures in the region.
