Lira, Uganda – The Chief Magistrate of Lira, Joe Fay Adoko, has granted bail to Awio Isaac, alias Awio Scrap Dealer, and six others accused of orchestrating a violent attack on popular local artist Walter Ogwang, better known as Lil Square, on January 3, 2025.
The accused, who include six bouncers allegedly hired by Awio, face charges of assault and malicious damage to property following the incident that occurred on Obote Avenue in Lira City.
According to police accounts and eyewitness reports, the incident unfolded in broad daylight when Awio and his team allegedly blocked Lil Square’s vehicle-a white Toyota Max 2 Grand (Reg: UAU 045Q) and carried out the assault.
The artist was physically attacked and his vehicle’s front windshield was shattered.
The suspects include Eric Odyeny, David Arok, Bonny Acai, Ronald Okumu, Ambrose Omara and Elvis Okoo, all of whom were reportedly involved in the attack.
Sources allege that the confrontation began over a monetary demand by Awio. When Lil Square reportedly failed to meet the demand, the attack was carried out, described by police as a “premeditated act of aggression.”
During the bail hearing on January 8, 2025, Magistrate Adoko ruled in favor of the suspects’ temporary release, setting strict conditions.
The case is set for its next hearing on January 16, 2025, with prosecutors expected to present more evidence.
SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, North Kyoga Police PRO, reassured the public of thorough investigations and a fair judicial process.
“No one is above the law. We are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and holding all perpetrators accountable,” Okema said.
The community remains divided-some calling for a resolution through the courts, while others demand stricter measures to curb public violence and intimidation in Lira City.
The January 16 court date is expected to shed more light on the motivations behind the incident and the accountability of all involved.
