Lira, Uganda | The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Lira District has set its sights on a clean sweep in the upcoming Local Council I (LC1) and Women Council elections, with party leaders calling on supporters to rally behind official flag bearers in every village.
Lira District NRM Vice Chairperson Abdul George said the party should achieve 100% victory in both male and female LC1 positions, citing its success in securing all constituency parliamentary seats and the Woman Member of Parliament position in the district.
Abdul made the remarks on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, during a mobilisation meeting at Agali Sub-county in Lira District, where he addressed party supporters ahead of the NRM village barazas scheduled for Wednesday. He said the meeting was aimed at preparing members for the barazas, which will focus on mobilising votes for NRM candidates contesting in the Women Council and LC1 elections while encouraging unity among supporters ahead of the July 28 polls.
He urged party members to remain united and work together until election day, saying strong coordination among supporters would help the NRM maintain its dominance at the grassroots. Abdul also called on members to be vigilant during mobilisation, warning that some people claiming to support the party may not be eligible voters because their names are missing from the Electoral Commission register after failing to register for the LC1 elections.
The NRM leader called for an end to political hatred and divisions, saying disagreements among members could slow down development efforts. He encouraged supporters to rally behind candidates chosen through the party structures and warned that members who contest as independents after failing to secure the NRM flag should no longer be considered official party candidates.
Abdul called for maximum participation from all party members, stressing that every supporter had a role in ensuring victory for NRM flag bearers. He further revealed that NRM National Chairperson President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has provided financial assistance to support candidates during the elections, with LC1 flag bearers receiving Shs100,000 to help facilitate their polling agents, while Women Council candidates had also been allocated funds to support their mobilisation activities.
The NRM is set to hold nationwide village barazas on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, as its final grassroots mobilisation and reconciliation drive ahead of the local elections. The activities are aimed at strengthening party unity, resolving internal divisions, discouraging independent candidates who could divide the NRM vote, and ensuring that all 72,000 villages across the country have clearly identified and verified party flag bearers. According to the official election timetable, Village Women Committee elections will be held on July 23, 2026, followed by Local Council I (LC1) chairperson elections on July 28, 2026.
