Lira Regional Referral Hospital Shuts Down Main Operating Theatre for Urgent Repairs

Lira, Uganda – Lira Regional Referral Hospital has announced the temporary closure of its main operating theatre for urgent repairs.

The theatre’s floor has deteriorated over time, making it unsafe for surgical procedures.

Renovation works, including the installation of a durable terrazzo floor, will begin on April 6 and are expected to be completed by April 30, 2025.

In a communication to District Health Officers (DHOs) and the City Health Officer in the Lango Sub-region, Acting Hospital Director Dr. Odur Andrew urged health facilities in the region to handle surgical cases during this period, particularly maternal and child health emergencies.

“This renovation is necessary to create a safer and more efficient operating environment. We ask all district health facilities to step in and manage surgical cases while these improvements are being made,” Dr. Odur said.

The hospital has secured the necessary funds to complete the work within the planned timeframe, ensuring that surgical services resume by the end of April.

Patients and health workers are advised to seek alternative surgical care arrangements until the upgrades are completed.

The Ministry of Health, the Director General of Health Services and the Hospital Management Board have all been informed of the closure.

This renovation is a significant step towards improving healthcare delivery at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, ensuring better and safer surgical services for the community.
