Lira, Uganda | Dr. Obote College Boroboro has earned a place among the three government-aided secondary schools that will represent Uganda in the baseball category at the forthcoming Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Associations (FEASSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania. The qualification follows the school’s impressive third-place finish at the National Secondary Schools Baseball Championship held at Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School in Gulu City.
Speaking to this publication on Friday, July 17, 2026, the school’s Games Teacher and Physical Education instructor, James Akona, said only the top three government-aided schools qualified to represent Uganda at the FEASSA Games. He explained that Panyadoli Secondary School from Kiryandongo District emerged champions, St. Peter’s Secondary School finished second, while Dr. Obote College Lira secured third place to book a ticket to the regional championship.
Akona said the achievement reflects the school’s impressive journey, having won the Lira City championship before emerging regional champions and eventually qualifying for the East African games. He encouraged students to embrace baseball, saying dedication to sports can create opportunities for international exposure and future careers.
The school’s baseball coach, Kizito Joseph Otim, described baseball as one of the world’s leading sports, noting that it originated in the United States. He expressed confidence that Dr. Obote College has what it takes to return from Tanzania with the championship trophy and appealed to other schools to invest more time in developing baseball talent.
Team captain Ajali Godwin Smith, a Senior Three student, said qualifying for the FEASSA Games is a historic achievement for the school. He revealed that baseball was only introduced at Dr. Obote College one month ago, yet the team managed to compete successfully against schools with several years of experience. The 17-year-old described the opportunity to represent Uganda abroad as a dream come true for both him and his family.
Deputy Head Teacher in charge of Administration, Tom Ogwang, described the qualification as another milestone in the school’s history. He thanked the parents, teachers, management, and students for their commitment, saying the success demonstrates the importance of supporting co-curricular activities. He added that the school will continue investing in sports and skills development to help learners unlock their full potential.
The FEASSA Games will be held in Morogoro, Tanzania, bringing together top secondary school athletes from across East Africa to compete in various sporting disciplines while promoting regional integration through school sports.
