Lira City, Uganda – Montana Bay Medical Centre in Angwetangwet, Lira City East Division, was shut down this afternoon by the Lira City Health Authority in collaboration with police.

The closure, spearheaded by Dr. Bernard Otucu, Lira City Health Officer, follows damning inspections that revealed gross violations of health and operational standards.
Two weeks ago, health inspectors uncovered shocking conditions at the facility, including unsanitary environments and a lack of basic medical supplies.
Further investigations revealed the employment of unqualified staff, putting patient safety at significant risk.
Despite earlier warnings and a closure directive from the Allied Health Council, Montana Bay Medical Centre defied orders and continued operations illegally.
“The management’s defiance left us no choice but to enforce closure with the backing of the Resident City Commissioner and Town Clerk,” said Dr. Otucu.
Staff reportedly fled the facility to evade arrest as the operation unfolded.
Patients admitted to the centre were transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital. However, the abrupt intervention left many frustrated.
Some patients who had already paid for services and medications, expressed dissatisfaction, with a few refusing to transfer.
“I feel abandoned,” one patient lamented. “We paid for services here; now we’re being sent away without clear answers.”

Dr. Christopher Orech, the facility’s proprietor, acknowledged the closure but noted that some recovering patients were still inside when authorities intervened.
The closure of Montana Bay Medical Centre highlights Lira City’s commitment to upholding health standards and protecting public safety.
“We can not allow any facility to operate below acceptable health standards,” Dr. Otucu emphasized.
Authorities have assured the public that similar inspections will continue across the city to ensure all health facilities comply with regulations.
While the crackdown on Montana Bay Medical Centre serves as a warning to other non-compliant facilities, it also underscores the urgent need for quality healthcare services in Lira City.
As the city takes a stand against malpractice, patients are urged to report irregularities and demand accountability from healthcare providers.
