Soroti, Uganda – Soroti City Woman MP Joan Alobo Acom has been remanded to prison despite her lawyer, Moses Okot Bitek Jr, strongly opposing the prosecution’s case, calling it speculative and unsupported by evidence.
Appearing before Soroti Chief Magistrate Hilda Bakanansa Walaga, Okot argued that the charges against Alobo and her 12 co-accused in connection to the March 6 destruction of Jozan Nursery and Primary School were baseless.
“There is no evidence that Hon. Alobo or any of the co-accused obstructed justice.
They remain innocent until proven guilty,” Okot stated, challenging the state’s push to keep them in custody.
However, the prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Paul Okello, insisted that Alobo and the group were responsible for acts of arson, malicious damage to property, housebreaking, theft and incitement to violence at Jozan School in Kigandani Cell, Soroti City.
Despite Okot’s strong defense, Magistrate Walaga ruled in favor of the state’s request, ordering the remand of MP Alobo and her co-accused.
The case was adjourned to March 20, 2025, for further mention as investigations continue.
