Kampala, Uganda | President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reshuffled his Cabinet, making significant changes that have seen several leaders from the Lango sub-region elevated to senior government positions while others were dropped.
The changes, announced under powers granted to the President by the 1995 Constitution, affected ministers, ministers of state, and senior presidential advisors.
Among the notable appointments is Erute South MP Sam Engola, who has been appointed Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Engola replaces Hillary Onek, who has been moved to the position of Minister in charge of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Speaking shortly after the announcement, Engola expressed gratitude to President Museveni for entrusting him with the new role and pledged to serve the country diligently.
Former Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng was appointed Minister of ICT and National Guidance in another major change. Aceng swaps roles with Chris Baryomunsi, who now takes over the health docket.
Former Gender minister Betty Amongi was dropped from Cabinet. She has been replaced by Henry Tumukunde as Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
Oyam District Woman MP Santa Sandra Alum Ogwang was appointed Minister of State in the Office of the President in charge of Economic Monitoring. Alum previously served as the UPC Party Whip in Parliament.
The reshuffle also saw Calvin Echodu appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs.
Alebtong District Woman MP Mercy Faith Lakisa was named Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development in charge of Youth and Children Affairs.
Lakisa, a dental surgeon and former vice guild president of Makerere University, currently serves as vice chairperson of the NRM Youth League for Northern Uganda.
Meanwhile, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua is set to become a Senior Presidential Advisor alongside Ruth Nankabirwa, Francis Mwebesa, and Evelyn Anite.
The specific portfolios for the advisory roles are yet to be communicated.
In the same changes, Kenneth Omona was transferred to the diplomatic service and is expected to serve as an ambassador at a station yet to be announced.
Norbert Mao retained his position as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
