Kwania, Uganda | Leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League in the Lango sub-region have urged women to form associations and actively participate in government wealth creation programmes to improve household incomes and eradicate poverty.

The call was made during a meeting of the Association of Lango NRM Women’s League held on Sunday in Aduku Town Council, Kwania District.

Speaking at the meeting, the overall Chairperson of the Association of Lango NRM Women’s League and Lira City NRM Women’s League Chairperson, Zena Opolot Opio, said the association is fully registered and aims to mobilise resources to economically empower women.

She said the association had already supported more than five members from Lira City, Lira District, Apac, and Kwania through various initiatives.

Opolot said the association had launched a fundraising drive to strengthen women’s economic activities and planned to establish a cooperative bank to support registered district SACCOs across the region.

She urged women to embrace government programmes aimed at fighting poverty and encouraged them to establish income-generating enterprises from the village to the district level, noting that economic empowerment was essential for improving household livelihoods.

The NRM Publicity Secretary for Kwania District, Emmanuel Opio Okello, who represented the district NRM chairperson, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting women’s groups at the grassroots.

He urged women to remain united, work hard, and rally behind leaders committed to transforming the region through socio-economic development.

Opio also encouraged more women to join the association, advocate for women’s rights, strengthen coordination among districts, and benchmark successful initiatives from other areas.

The Chairperson of the NRM Entrepreneurs League in Kwania District, Nixson Adii, encouraged women to take advantage of existing government wealth creation programmes to increase household incomes.

He said the government had invested substantial resources in programmes aimed at promoting self-reliance and urged beneficiaries to utilise the support responsibly to improve their livelihoods.

LC I Chairperson of Aduku Township Cell, Teduka Ward, Jimmy Ohuru, applauded the initiative, saying it complemented the government’s efforts to achieve middle-income status under the National Development Plan IV (NDP IV) and Uganda Vision 2040.

Meanwhile, David Emer, Chairperson of the Kwania United Business Association, welcomed the initiative and commended Kwania District NRM Women’s League Chairperson Semmy Ejang Opio for championing women’s economic empowerment.

Emer revealed that leaders had mobilised sh10 million to support members in wealth creation projects and urged women to seize the opportunity to improve their household incomes.

Closing the meeting, Semmy Ejang Opio, the Kwania District NRM Women’s League Chairperson, thanked members for their commitment and appealed to the government to increase support for women through skills training, financial empowerment and income-generating projects.

She also appealed to men to stop domestic violence against women involved in politics, saying women should be given the freedom, time, and support to participate in leadership and contribute to community development without intimidation.
